By mixing two or more of the pure metals, alloys melting at much lower temperatures are produced and it is possible to obtain an alloy containing all five metals which will melt in hot water i.e. Lens blocking alloy 117 having a melting point of 47Oc.
Generally, to obtain the full benefit from a low melting alloy, it is desirable to choose the eutectic, that is to say, the one composition in each alloy system which melts sharply at a single definite temperature. Other alloys containing a different proportion of the same metals have a plastic range and hence do not melt completely at one temperature. However non-eutectic alloys can be supplied for special purposes.
Uses for low melting alloys.
Many alloys make excellent soft solders, they can be applied in the same way as conventional tin/lead alloys, but offer a greater margin of safety when the assembly to be soldered must not be overheated.
